EDIUS 11 video editor is a joy to edit with it is stable and I have just completed a band promo with 15 tracks of UHD footage in multicam using proxy files to play in real time on an older dual 22 core Xeon PC.
I particularly like that I own the software, and I am not charged a monthly fee. Free in version updates are via the EDIUS.net manager and there is always a cross upgrade path with a small fee to go to the next major version which happens every 3 years or so.
What I do like is that I can spread the workspace over4 screens and have Time in Pixels Nobe Omnisope connected via NDI on the 5th monitor, to check the output gamut whilst I edit, and display the output on my 4K TV, via Black Magic Design Decklink 4K Extreme 12G card HDMI out.
I like that the workspace remains fixed for one operator to be able to access all of the functions within the main window, and plugins, colour correction all pop out into a window of their own and can be OK’d and closed when finished.
I do not like the restrictions of other software where the functions of ingest, assemble, editing, colour correction, audio and delivery are all in their own confined workspaces so for example edit point adjustment cannot take place in the colour workspace. I then feel restricted by the software by putting my desired actions into its own boxes.
The Ai tools are very useful, via the EDIUS.net BAT server application such as Speech to Text creating Vistitle subtitle overlays, Text to Speech, Beat Detector (used on the band promo), Ai upscaling of lower resolution videos, Object Removal, and a host of others.
ProDAD plugins work well with EDIUS11 including Vitascene to give your transitions and effects that sparkle.
Some self disciple is required in organising the footage, graphics and other assets into logical folders before editing starts and then using the same folder structure in the bin makes finding material much easier.
All camcorder formats are supported that I have come across, and when a new one comes out the Grass Valley team are in Japan and all the camera manufacturers are a short drive away to understand the new codec or format which is quickly then included in an update.
A tip: EDIUS outputs 8 audio PCM tracks on the HDMI out which defeats an A/V amplifier from going into Pro Logic decode. Insert an HDMI audio extractor in the HDMI cable with a switch that is labelled Pass, 5.1, or Stereo, and in stereo mode the other PCM tracks are switched off and the A/V amplifier can now switch to Pro Logic decode, which is very useful to detect any misbalance in the dialogue. Of course in Pass mode EDIUS can address each speaker via the A/V amplifere so using the channel map setting a number of audio tracks can be allocated to each speaker allowing a 7.1 edit.
Overall I find EdIUS 11 a very quick way to edit video and deliver the final format to the client. Visit the Video4Business Shop to see more product details
